The aim of Organic farming is to produce quality food without the use of chemical pesticides or artificial fertilizers.

There are several basic principles and methods some of which are listed below.

• Coexist with, rather than dominate, natural systems
• Minimise pollution and damage to the environment
• Minimise the use of non-renewable resources
• Protect and enhance the farm environment with particular regard to conservation and wildlife
• Rotate crops to sustain soil fertility
• Full use of manure and vegetable waste
• Ensuring the ethical treatment of animals

At South Penquite we started conversion in May 1999 under the guidance of the Soil Association. It takes two years to convert the land over which time we have not used any pesticides or nitrogen fertilizers

Once the land is certified Organic then any calves or lambs which are born on the farm will be reared according to Organic standards and then the meat may be sold under the Organic label

As you can see this is a very long term process requiring a great deal of committment as it takes several years before a farmer can produce finished Organic beef. However there is a growing market for Organic produce and quite deservedly so for Organic husbandry as well as ensuring the well-being of the farm and livestock, also cares for the environment
